Looking for information from people who have sadly had to deal with the death of a loved one and genuine experiences not from sales people.

Is it essential to have a prepaid funeral plan? If so what company did you use and how was their service.

Arranging a funeral without a funeral plan, how was your experience and who did you use.

My husband has been very unwell and we’re getting older and this is playing on my mind as we have no experience in Spain. I would really appreciate hearing the experiences of people who have had to deal with the death of a loved one.

Many thanks

The advantages of having a funneral plan is they take care and arrange everything when a loved one passes on.

The disadvantage of NOT having one is it falls to you to deal with everything.  And that includes maybe speaking in Spanish.

It is adviseable and strongly recommended to take a funneral plan out.  There are many on the market.  We pay monthly for us (only because we didn't have the funds at the time to pay the whole policy in one go).  This is also an option.

You don’t just have to look at the widely advertised companies mainly dealing with expats. Spanish insurance companies also offer this. My mother has had a plan for many years with Santa Lucía who are a well known Spanish insurance outfit, based I think in Alicante. They certainly have several offices round and about our region, and presumably would be available through various agencies.

Hi  Also if you pay a funeral plan monthly and the person passes away before the policy is paid in full they will  require that payment up front BEFORE the funeral will go ahead.  Unfortunately this happened to a friend of mine and lucky she had savings to pay for this.  As stated they do everything for you but also if you go to a funeral directors they also do all the final paperwork and funeral to your exact specification and cost.  Gillian

My mother in law didn't have insurance, she died at home in November last year. We informed the police they took our information, phoned our local funeral home in Pilar (who are extremely helpful, speak good English), we waited for the doctor, the police contact your health centre and the emergency doctor comes and certifies the death. Once the doctor left, we phoned the funeral home back they came and removed the body all done in 1 hour. We met with them the following day and made the arrangements. We did not have a service, she didn't want one, my partner and myself went to the chapel of rest on the day of the cremation, dressed the coffin in flowers, played her favourite music and said our goodbyes. 3 days later we had the ashes and all legal documents €2950. paid in 2 installments, 1 prior to cremation the other a month later. Go enquire at your local funeral home. Hope this helps.

Thank you so much for the information. Just what I wanted someone who’d experienced the service. I feel a bit pressurised into paying in advance for a funeral, people seem to focus on how fast things must be done and it will be difficult it is if you haven’t got a funeral plan in place.

Many thanks.

My late husband and I took out a funeral plan via Helvetia in Playa Flamenca several years ago that is paid monthly.   When my husband passed away I had one telephone conversation with their representative and everything was taken care of, death certificates, celebration of his life (he wasn’t religious), cremation, snacks and tea or coffee afterwards and I even received an amount of money back as the full allowable sum wasn’t used.  I have continued the policy, with a lesser monthly payment, so that I am now covered.    It certainly helped me during such a difficult time to have someone take over the arrangements.
