Hi all,

Has anyone ever painted their yellow pine doors etc. In their property? I have a desire to paint all mine dark grey as a nice contrast to the white walls . There is so much of it though with all the doors and surrounds plus 3 double wardrobe doors! I’ll probably get someone in to do it as we’re not the best decorators. I’ve had different advice between stripping first and painting with a brush ( sounds very time consuming and we don’t live out here) spray painting ( loads of preparation protecting walls) and also one person said -don’t do it as the pine doesn’t need upkeep but paint will!

At home we’ve used dark grey and white together on staircase and landing and love the effect - so fresh and modern but we had no pine to contend with. I’d be very interested in advice from decorators or anybody, thanks in advance , Anne

Hello, the easy way is to use what in UK is ESP (Easy Surface Preparation) and Leroy Merlin definitely sell this. Paint on and dry, simply put, then paint over, both easier and quicker with a roller. Kitchen doors and drawer fronts, handles and wardrobe doors can be removed to be painted, whatever method used.
The downsides are that the new surfaces will be prone to chipping so may end up looking shabby chic quite quickly, again, whatever method used. Also whilst drying, insects and dust/sand will stick to the new paint ( Unless they are taken away to be professionally stripped and sprayed).
If you are considering getting someone in to do it, compare the cost with replacement doors which will last many years.

Hi Cheryl,

Thanks very much that’s very helpful. It sounds like ESP is the way to go. We don’t tend to get too many insects that I’ve seen so far but will have to watch out for the dust. I’ll take all of your advice on board when we get round to doing it - so helpful, thanks again 👍,

Hi I had someone come in and paint my kitchen cupboards in a pale satin grey, I asked the painter how he did them. He told me to get TITANLAK Satinado paint diluted with 10% thinners (I wanted White Satinada for my hall doors and window frames) I just had to wash the pine down with soap and water to remove any grease, I lightly sanded with some fine sandpaper then just did 3 coats over 3 days, small rollers are best, I have painted the doors and frames in the living area and the window frames on the inside, I am about to do the wardrobe doors and the back of the bedroom doors, I am no decorator but was very proud of the finish. By the way my kitchen cupboards have been done a year and are still fine but I do not rent the house out we live here. The man who painted my kitchen units was Kevin Britton (Self Employed) look for him on Facebook, he is good and very reasonable, we have had him back to paint all out interior walls and ceilings as that was too much of a big job for us. Hope this helps.

Hi Jann,

That does help thanks so much. We weren’t thinking of painting the kitchen cupboards, at the moment anyway, mainly all the bedroom doors and their surrounds, the wardrobe doors and a large archway and small arch . Sounds like yours was very successful so I’ll look into doing it that way. Though we don’t live in Spain we don’t rent our place either so it shouldn’t get too much wear and tear.I will keep note of your decorator thanks very much for that and the great advice .cheers ,

Anne
