I would buy the Michel Thomas foundation then masterclass courses before attending lessons. It is easy to follow not too expensive and thorough - Steve.

Better still Duolingo free on line basic Spanish, go at your own pace and it's FREE

I am doing the Michel Thomas method myself after trying others I have bought .The M Thomas method is easier to absorb and you don't get that "have to motivate myself" feeling like when studying standard book and CD courses. There is lots of free stuff on the internet and youtube but the M Thomas course is very well rated above other courses. You can see this if you look on Amazon where people give feedback. From what I understand it teaches all the basic theory and phrases necessary and then it is up to the learner to improve by topping up with more and more phrases and vocabulary. This is the point from where I intend to take lessons with someone or join a class - Steve.

I had a quick look at the Duolingo Course and in my opinion it is rubbish. No comparison with the Michel Thomas course. There are no descriptions of stress or phrasing - it would just leave a beginner guessing and he/she could end up giving up. Michel Thomas goes deep into the phrasing and technical theory and once a word is covered that's it job done, you fully understand how to say it and to apply it. This gives you the confidence to know it is time to proceed further to the next lesson. A lot of the cheap CD courses are similar, they speak the words but do not describe how you should stress and phrase them. Sometimes the ear does not pick this phrasing up easily without being taught it in detail - Steve.

Surely it's a matter of how much Spanish one needs in the beginning and how much one is prepared to lay out financially, if moving to Spain the best way to learn is be there, listen and learn parrot fashion as I did in Greece and Sweden over the years fluent in both languages now . Perhaps you wont be grammatically correct but you will understand and be understood after a few months.

Yes I can understand your point and I am not opposing it. We are all different in opinion and choice of method. I don't live in Spain so am preparing by studying Spanish before I move there. Hearing it for real is definitely the best way to practise - Steve.

Hola,
I don't know if you live in UK at the moment & plan to move to Spain, or are already in Spain. If you're in the U.K. Then try to find an evening class or group where you can talk with other people & have the opportunity for conversation. Can't beat having others to chat with. If you're already in Spain, then prop up the local Spanish bars, talk to locals in the shops. Just take any & every opportunity to practice. Most Spanish towns offer free Spanish classes to non-Spanish speakers. Check out the local College or Ayuntamiento (town hall). Don't be afraid to make mistakes as many Spanish are really happy for you to practise. Children's Spanish TV is a good extra as the speech is a bit slower & the language simpler. Try not to surround yourself with Brits ALL the time, or you won't practise!

Hello did you find anyone in Mil Palmeras? I’ve been learning Spanish in the UK last two years, I’m looking forward to coming to Spain for a month in the summer and would like to find a teacher or attend a class.
