Hi, Have you got to be a home owner to get a NIE please, I have one but my daughter has asked

No, but they do ask for a reason. You need one to open a bank account, buy a car, anything on credit (most of the time) and so on but you don't need to own property to get one. Also been asked for it sometimes when receiving deliveries.
You are also better applying for one through the Spanish consulate in your home country as it would be quicker.

Hi Rosemarie1, In a nutshell answer is no. If any of your affairs include Spanish assets or Spanish real estate or anything to do with Spain then it is strongly advisable for all your family and heirs all get Spanish NIEs. Easier (less complications) for cross border Spanish Wills, Spanish and home country legal documents, Spanish and home country taxes, Spanish heirship legal rights (even if later heirs decide to officially refuse) etc. Costs about €10euros (maybe a bit more) for each person. If you and all your heirs do NOT use their Spanish NIE everybody can leave it in a cupboard or drawer.
