I'm planning to move out full time in Autumn and not sure whether to buy a left hand drive car in England and bring it over or fly out and buy in Spain, they're very expensive in England, I was hoping to get something decent for about 5 to 6 thousand pounds but that doesn't get you a lot, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Paul

Hi Paul

Go on FWR eurocars website. They have a good selection of different priced cars. Frank who owns it is a sound guy

It will give you an idea of prices

If you buy a LHD car in the UK then you’ll still need to have it registered on Spanish plates and pay the import duty (there may be ways around the duty if you can get the car classed as a Personal Posession, but I think you need to have owned it for at least 6 months and do the registration within 1 month of first going on the Padron).

If you buy a Spanish registered car in the UK then be very careful that it has no outstanding fines or finance, and that you have all the paperwork from the previous owner to be able to transfer it to you (the process can be complex - not like filling-in the back of the V5c and sending it off to Swansea).

I’d go for renting a car for a few weeks when you arrive then buying secondhand in Spain. Make sure you have your NIE number sorted in advance, as I’m told waiting times are long in Spain at the moment.

Pete.

When I came out to Spain three years ago I wasn't sure what to do about my 2 year old Skoda. I went to the local Skoda garage in the UK and he offered me a good price for it. I asked how much he would give me one month and a thousand miles more, and he offered the same. So, I arranged the sale with him and brought it to Spain using the ferry to Santander, driving from there onwards.

Once here in Spain, I only had 30 days car insurance from the UK so I bought a new car here (financed with the promised money from the UK dealer). I then used a car transporter in Spain, who charged me 500 € to deliver it to the garage in the UK.

Although it cost me 500 € to send the car back, it was a lot less than having to have a UK registration changed to Spanish plates, plus the obligatory headlight change. Oh, and I would still have had a RHD, which is not ideal on the continent.

Don't be tempted to drive more than a few months on UK plates in Spain. It is illegal and you will get stopped and fined!

Thanks for the advice all, I'm now feeling more inclined to buy in Spain, it just seems more straight forward and I already have an NIE and a property so I'll have a look at FWR.
