I need to fill in a UK self-assessment to declare rental income on my Spanish property. Tax has been paid in Spain by my Spanish accountant but I need someone to prepare and submit my UK tax form for me. Ideally, in the long run, I would prefer someone who can deal with both tax authorities, but for the moment just someone who can do the UK for me would be great. Does anyone use someone they can recommend?

Thanks

P

Hi Portet,

Have you considered doing this yourself?  It's very straightforward via HMRC's Self-assessment system and, as you're resident in the UK, you can submit it online:

https://www.gov.uk/tax-foreign-income/paying-tax

They have online tutorials and if there's anything you need help with, you can call their Helpline:

0161 930 8445

open Monday to Friday 8am - 8pm and Saturday 8am - 4pm.

Kind regards,

Kim

I wanted a tax assessor/accountant to do the same thing for me a few years ago, and nobody could be bothered !

I think the job was too small to interest anyone.

As Kimmy says, it is an easy online job.

I might have another look at it but it seemed quite complicated to my small brain. Looking at SA105 Pages UKP 1 and 2 it seemed to cover deductible expenses which I don't think I can claim from the UK HMRC (if I can't claim them from spain post Brexit) and there seemed to be nowhere to say what tax I had paid in Spain so I wasn't taxed again.

Maybe I was looking at the wrong form / pages.

Any further pointers welcome.

Thanks again both.

Hi Portet,

The main Self-assessment form, SA100, is really straightforward - each year, I print off the 3 forms I need to submit and complete them in draft.  Although my situation is different, in so far as I'm resident in Spain, I'm registered as a Non-resident Landlord with HMRC, so I also have to complete SA105.  The first time I did it, I had the printed form in front of me, called the Helpline and they talked me through it, which boxes to complete and what information I should enter for my specific circumstances.  I'd recommend doing the same thing - they're very helpful.

The most difficult thing I found with the entire process was registering for Self-assessment.  For some reason that escapes me, HMRC give you about 3 different ways of registering, e.g. via Royal Mail.  My recommendation is to register for the "Government Gateway" and ignore any other options.

Kind regards,

Kim

My recollection is that when I registered for my "government gateway" my reference number came by post a week or two later. So just allow this in your timings.

Good luck !
