Hi All,

My wife and I are now Spanish Residents with TIE cards . We are 73 and 75 respectively and are in the U.K. at present to sell our flat and make the move to Spain permanent. We are confused with regards to retaining U.K. prescription rights and Spanish National Health rights. What is S1 , EHIC and GHIC . I have to use Urostomy bags etc, and my wife has also medicational needs.

Any advice would be welcome!

Regards

Hello

Just a little reminder, if you have only recently got your TIE cards........ dont stay away from Spain for too long. During your 1st 5yrs of residency, if you live less than 182 days in total your residency will become void.

Cheers

If you are receiving UK government pension you will be entitled to healthcare here in Spain under the S1 healthcare cover which entitles you to full healthcare paid for by the UK government. You need to apply for the S1 healthcare forms through the Overseas healthcare team at Newcastle. If you ring them they will explain the process and send the completed forms to your Spanish address. (They won't send them to a UK address)

You take those forms to your local INSS office and they will process the forms. You take the processed forms to your local clinic who will then give you a SIP card and assign you to a doctor.

The EHIC & GHIC cards are for use to gain medical treatment as a visitor or holidaymaker.

If you have an EHIC or GHIC, take them along to the Centro de Salud once you have been to the INSS as we were asked for ours before they would issue the SIP card.

Hi Locknut,

If you´re resident in Spain, you have to be here at least 183 days (6 months + 1 day) every year of the first 5 years of residency; also, during the first 5 years, you must not be absent for more than a total of 10 months.  You can apply for an exception of 1 year absence for critical circumstances, such as serious illness.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi

The GHIC is the old EHIC and when your EHIC runs out you get the new GHIC  we have a new one , and it has the Union Jack on it, as we are not  residents in Spain but have a property in Spain 17 years,
