Agreed re British plumbers here, we also got our fingers burnt by a

British outfit, advertised in C B News, over supply and installation of replacement pump. Nowhere near as problematic as RayD’s heating situation but still a hassle; should’ve asked local well known Spanis heating firm!!!

Thanks. That is helpful advice.

One further question ... are your gas canisters butane or propane ?

Hi guys,

Thanks for all your replies. We actually have gas mains central heating on a 7 year deal. I wanted to know about the gas bottles just in case the cost of mains gas becomes ridiculously high in the future.

Hello,

We're renting here for a few months now, but looking ahead to when we buy a place - hopefully next year - we would appreciate any advice on the best type of heating to find - or install - in a villa for the winters. I really feel the cold and like to be warm at home, without having to wear severa...

...l thick jumpers! The ideal would be reasonable running costs, not hot air (which I find noisy, dries the air and as soon as it's switched off, the room feels freezing). Is there a good, economical way of heating the house, maybe to include some background heating, so it's not so extreme, either warm or freezing?

Thanks!

We bought a house a year ago and just had an Combi Oil Boiler (with domestic hot water supply) installed. Spanish made, excellent quality, plus a 1000ltr oil tank. Bought it online - delivered right to the installation point.. We also bought the composite pipes (Pex-Alu-Pex)  and connectors ourselves, and brought the radiators from Germany. Steel radiators - better than the Alu radiators on the market here. Composite pipes are the best. Easy to lay and there will be no pipe clogging because lime cannot stick to the PEX inside of the pipes. It's similar to Teflon. Water on the Costa Blanca is very hard!

Did the slitting for the pipe canals ourselves. After the pipes were laid by the specialist, plus the radiator installation, we filled the trenches our- selves again. Filled it all with cement, and then re-tiled the floors.

The boiler and tank are in the garage next to the house.

Total of 11 radiators. Upstairs and downstairs. Two separate heating circuits for up and down. Each regulated by separate thermostats. As the piping is all under floor, it acts as additional floor heating.

Fast and great heating. Basically instant hot water. During warm season/days heating can be switched off, and only hot water is on. 1000ltrs of oil around 800 Euro. Lasts for around a year. We have 4 showers and 2 kitchens.200sqm living area.

By doing all this ourselves and only paying labour costs, we saved around 10,000 Euro compared to an offer we received from a local company.

Gas heating - having to buy the gas in bottles here -  is expensive. Heating oil can be bought in the off season at cheaper prices. Our boiler is a condenser and saves up to 30% of a conventional boiler.

Andrew65 has the right idea. A heat pump system gives more out than goes in. Just remember to check your incoming supply is capable of running such a system.

Bottled gas is the most expensive way to go. Unfortunately we don't have a firm like Calor where you can easily get a 1tonne tank in the garden. I looked into that a few years ago but the regulations and faffing about killed it.

Another option is a pellet boiler, I am working on that one at the moment. But they are quite expensive to buy.
