Does anyone know if you can buy warfarin over the counter in a pharmacy instead of going into the doctors as our sip card has run out

Hi Tony,

When you say your SIP has run out, is it the 6-months temporary SIP for non-residents?  If so, you could take your EHIC and passport to a pharmacy instead, although I don't know whether Warfarin is available without prescription.

Kind regards,

Kim

Hi Tony,

So you're registered with a doctor in Spain and have received a prescription for Warfarin previously?  We're not allowed to visit medical centres during lockdown (unless it's an emergency); the procedure is to phone your doctor's surgery, who will update the 'script on the computer and then you can go direct to a pharmacy to collect it.  Have you tried that?

Kind regards,

Kim

No I haven’t because I’ve not had to get warfarin tablet before in Spain as I bring enough with me from the uk 🇬🇧 to last but because of the travel restrictions we can not go back to the uk till after I run out hence the need for the warfarin

Hi Tony, I have bought warfarin several times at farmacia without any problems in the past when I,ve extended my stay in Spain. I took my box and was given the identical medication. They are very cheap. Like you I bring sufficient to last my stay but may need to extend again at this time too. I have never registered for a sip card.

Regards

Pauline.

Hello TonyD and Pauline,

It should  be a relief to be able to get an important medication without too much difficulty in this emergency situation.

Please remember that you need fairly regular blood testing while taking Warfarin.

I believe that you could avail of blood tests at some pharmacies in Spain.  Not sure what arrangements are currently in place.

Thank you for your comments I’m relieved that I can get my medicine and as my INR testing I’m lucky that I’m very stable so I’m sure I can go without a check for 12 weeks by which time I’ll be able to go to the clinic to be tested

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Hi RayD do you know if you can buy antibiotics OTC here for food positioning ? Just for my reference. Saves a trip to medical centre etc.

Thanks,

Buzzby
