Hi,

My husband and I are in Spain for a month looking at areas between denia and altea for us to move to. We are a bit overwhelmed by the number of nice towns and could do with some advice on narrowing down our choices.

We are mid 40s, self employed in IT, like hiking, sailing, and good bars and restaurants. We would like to be in walking distance of a town or village with a few bars and shops, and good access to a larger town.

We like altea le Vella very much, and javea old town. We aren't bothered about being that close to a beach, and in terms of property, we would like a detached villa or house with a medium sized garden as we are both keen gardeners.

We don't have kids and do not speak Spanish but we are trying to learn, so we would like an area with some ex pats around us.

Any tips and advice would be much appreciated.

Hi, most of the towns/villages in this region have a thriving ex-pat population. Javea serves as a local centre for many of them. In terms of where you should move to, that is a matter of personal choice - all the villages and towns inland are pleasant with the type of property which you would like - this will be governed by your budget. Honestly would suggest that you register with a couple of reputable agents and ask them to take you to various properties which may meet your criteria; this is the only way in which you will begin to narrow down a search.

Would you be intending to set up business in IT here? You would really need a working command of Spanish even if mainly dealing with ex-pats -although I realise the generic term ‘IT’ covers many disciplines. If you are specialised in one particular field I imagine you would certainly need Spanish - there are many many native IT companies here, although of course you could be working online internationally?

Gardening here is completely different to UK and depending upon where you decide to live, will present its own unique challenges, not least in terms of even whether it is possible to dig the earth without hiring machinery!!!!! And forget grass unless you want an enormous and unjustifiable water bill!!!!! However, if you know what your re doing, then you will no doubt enjoy it and the results can be amazing. There is the famous Mediterranean garden society which you could join - some friends of ours are keen gardeners and members, they say it is very useful.

Hope this of a little help

Stephanie
