I've always received a lot of PMs, which I've always tried to respond to, but lately the number has reached the point where I can no longer respond to them all.

Yesterday alone I received 24 PMs.

Some were from friends, and are welcome.

Every one of the balance was from people asking for advice about topics that are already well covered on the forum.

I'd make a few points:

As well as spending a lot of time trying to sort out Margaret's estate, I have a lot of jobs to do on the house. For that reason, I have to limit the amount of time I spend on forum matters.

Asking a question to me alone means that the person asking doesn't get input from other members who would be equally helpful if the question was asked on the forum.

In the time spent answering PMs, I could update existing guides or create new ones - which would hopefully be helpful to a wider audience.

For the above reasons, for anyone who sends me a PM about a topic I think could be asked on the forum, I'm simply going to answer with a link to this post. I'm not trying to offend anyone - I just want more control over my own time.

I can't understand why people send a PM to reply to a post I have made on a thread rather than just add to the thread.

Not a regular user of the PM facility myself, and I think the point raised by Jim over Forum participation in topics is valid.

Everyone can then have an opportunity to benefit from open discussions .

I see the benefit of PM.

Data protection.

Passing on numbers/addresses, (private one to one information)

or meeting an arrangement to buy beds for eg:/or other ancillary items which generally not required on general discussion.

I don’t think anyone will be offended Jim. As we say in Yorkshire ‘you’ve got a lot on your plate ‘ at the moment.

Take care

Cathy

I can see the point and have done it myself on occasion, when you want to give some helpful info but you don't want it splashed all over the forum. Details of your income or tax, for example.

I can understand if it is personal details but not when it is just an ordinary reply.

There does seem to have been a good few posts recently that appear to try to engage Jim by stealth, suggesting “ you are the man who can advise” or one liners asking for help.

Many of the posts, perhaps understandably, relate to residencia. No amount of deflection, suggesting they use Jim’s guides, works with some. I notice they disappear from the thread; perhaps resorting to a PM!

Maybe there should be a rider -

DO NOT POST UNTIL YOU HAVE CHECKED JIMS GUIDES

I’ve said that tongue in cheek;  or have I? 🤪🥂

That’s a lot of PM’s, Jim. You are very popular! Thanks for letting us know. As you say, most topics can be discussed openly on the forum. I hope life is being kind to you now. Very best wishes, Sheila

John and Villas, I am very much in agreeance with the points you have made .
