Can anyone give me an estimate on the cost of health care for two adults per month/yearly, how long before we are able to claim for the health care in Spain?

Hello
More info needed ...are you in receipt of a UK state pension, if not how old are you? Are you already living here legally or is the healthcare question related to an application for a NLV ( non lucrative visa)?
Cheers

Hello Barbara.
Ok that helps... You will need a one year fully paid comprehensive health insurance , each for the NLV . Prices vary considerably often dependant on existing conditions etc, I have seen people post on here who have paid anything between €700 ---€1500 per person.... you will need to get quotes.
After that you will be eligible to apply for Convenio Especial in Spain
This a guide that gives you details including prices.......

Thank you for that, I read that we would have to pay for private health insurance until my husband reaches pensionable age which would be in 5 yrs time, but are you saying after 12 months of private health care for both of us we can join the Spanish health care?

Hello Barbara
Yes, the price per month increases the closer you get to pension age. Here is another explanation....
What is the Convenio Especial for healthcare?
The Convenio Especial is a pay-in scheme for public health care services delivered by the Spanish regional health authorities. For a monthly fee (€60 under 65, €157 over 65) you’ll be covered by the Spanish public healthcare system, including pre-existing conditions, although you will have to pay for prescriptions and some extras like prosthetics.

Hi Barbara,
My husband and I are 63 and 60 respectively. We have our private health insurance with ASSSA which costs €870 each per year for mid level cover with no exclusions. We chose to stay with PHI, but if you wish, after your first year residing in Spain, you can apply to join the Convenio Especial instead. Neither PHI, nor the C.E., cover the cost of prescriptions, but the advantage of the C.E. is that it doesn't exclude pre-existing conditions.
So long as the UK government doesn't renege on its post-Brexit commitments, once your husband qualifies for his S1 from the UK at State Retirement Age which allows him to obtain Spanish healthcare funded by the UK, you will be able to "piggy-back" on his S1 until you qualify for your own. At that time, it will enable you both to cancel your PHI or C.E.
If you want to obtain quotes for PHI, you could speak to Alfonso at Gran Alacant Insurance Services - he advertises on the forum and has received many good reviews from members.
Kind regards,
Kim

Hi Barbara,
As you will probably gleam from the responses, PHI isn't always as easy as it looks. However it is necessary for anyone under retirement age.
There are a lot of caveats with almost all policies, with time restrictions for different conditions, and your second question of 'how long before you can claim' is where some companies will differ.
Most are 6 months with attached restrictions for general non urgent care, some are more and your first years cover generally will give you accident and emergency cover. Any condition that could or may be linked to pre existing, degenerative or like could be a problem. I would encourage you to read the small print of any policy you go for.
As Kimmy has said once you are in the PHI (as I am) although the Convenio Especial is available after 1 year, the cost is similar and therefore once you have committed to PHI and the restrictions of time ceases you may choose to stay private.
Something else as food for thought, that I don't know the answer to but think it may be possible,
As a Spanish resident/Non lucrative visa holder and paying PHI in Spain, your UK healthcare may not be rescinded/transferred ? Therefore there may be the option of returning to the UK for any treatments not covered here ? Especially if you still own a property in the UK. This isn't the case once you go onto the Spanish system but may be while paying for PHI. Maybe someone else has an opinion on this ?
