We need to get an ITV test for our english registered car to be able to change it to spanish plates, but have been told that as our speedometer only reads in MPH the dial face will need to be changed to read KPH. under the mileometer we do have a digital readout for KPH but was told this was not permitted in the test, it has to be on the dial readout. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Furthermore front and rear lights need to be according to RHD (road). Get it all cheap from a good car dump https://www.desguaceparis.com/contacto/

Apparently some changes in the regulations in 2018 made mph only speedos no longer acceptable for an ITV but typically it should only have an impact on classic cars from UK and American imports most of which will also have mph only speedos.

Yours sounds like an unusual combination and I guess the salient question is, is the kph readout a standard feature of the car or some 3rd party GPS driven add on you've fitted yourself?

If it's a stock feature then I think it ought to pass as it will form part if the vehicles  European homologation and in that instance my instinct would be to cross my fingers and try my luck.

I'm presuming here that it is a European model and not a grey import from somewhere else in the world?

There is a risk to that though because a fail on that point will be classified as 'grave' and if that happens it will mean that you will be restricted to driving the car home and then to the garage or workshop where you're having the problem corrected.

Changing a dial face, if in fact that's even possible on its own, may be a time consuming and costly task. More likely I would say, and possibly more practical, would be a complete change of speedo and if that's how it goes then will need a certificate from whomever does the swap stating the miles/km on the old and new odometers, it's an anti 'clocking' measure.

Good luck!

Hello CharlieFarmer

Thank you for your comments

We went back earlier today and queried it. Our car is standard with nothing changed. To amend my earlier comment, the digital KPH is under the clock but all in the same display as the analogue dial so all normal. And yes it is a normal european model.

Am very happy to say that the ITV station got a senior technician to look at the car and he saw that the KPH was clearly visible and said ok thats fine. We think that when the tester looked and photographed the car yesterday the car was switched off so the digital display did not show up (they took so many photos!)

So once we collect all the paperwork and documents on Friday we can now carry on with the rematriculation, thankfully

So a message to all, after seeing all the posts about registering a UK car in Spain, yes it probably would have been easier buying a spanish car, though they are so expensive over here, especially as we have a mercedes estate. And particularly now the UK transition period is coming to an end
