Hi

We are thinking of buying a holiday home in Oliva old town - what are peoples experiences of this and would you recommend the area? We want a traditional Spanish town as I can speak some Spanish but with some expats around as well. What do you think?

Hi, I'd just thought I'd give you my take on the old town in Olivia, I thought to about buying there, luckily enough I had a very truthful estate agent, it's very picturesque and all that for sure, I was looking at properties up to around the 120k euro.  Many of the properties are in an awful state of repair and would costs substantial amounts to make habitable, the first viewing was in the evening and I couldn't help notice several things, the prevalent smell of weed (cannabis) and the noise, there were many people sitting outside their houses, and the noise of chickens and pigs.  The following day I asked the agent what it was all about, seemingly up by the old castle area, is where the gipsy's live, they are not like the gipsy's in the UK, they just have an alternative lifestyle, but they live outside their properties till very late in the evening, they all keep livestock and smoking drugs is the norm.  I went up one evening to see if this was true and it was.  I eventually bought a lovely small two bedroomed townhouse in villalonga for half the price and only cosmetic work to do, and still only 15 minutes drive to the beach and totally Spanish.  Try looking at the surrounding villages, Pego, Ador, Villalonga, Fon't d'Carros, there are plenty of them prices are much cheaper and properly Spanish villages.  I hope this helps you not make the mistake I almost did.
