Good morning,

What a process it's been to get a residency visa for Spain. I started last August and just today I'm dropping off the very thick pile of required documentation at the Spanish consulate here in Houston.

My girlfriend Gina and I have been talking about moving to Europe for a few years. First Italy and then, after visiting Granada in the summer of 2019, Spain. She's lucky in that she has Italian citizenship and passport, but I'm caught trying to acquire a visa in the time of a 100 year pandemic.

We're renting a house in Oliva for one year and during that year we'll look for a property to buy. In 3 or 4 weeks I should be good to go and hopefully, fingers crossed, we'll in Spain by mid-February.

At any rate, that is my tale of woe and potential triumph.

Pete.

Hi Pete,

Good luck with your move. My partner and I moved to Adsubia (about 10km from Oliva) from the UK two and a half years ago, and we love it. Pre covid we spent a lot of time shopping and socialising in Oliva, and look forward to resuming it when the virus is history.

If we can give you any help or advice, just PM me.

Hi Pete

Hope you get to make it over soon.

In terms of the process to having your long term visa approved, effectively Spain granting you residency, how were the financial tests for you? Do you work or will you be relying on other means?

I know this might sound overly inquisitive but since the UK left the EU people are keen to understand how flexible or otherwise the financial rules for Spanish residency are being applied and it might be interesting to hear your story. US and UK are now treated the same in theory.

regards

I'm not sure there is flexibility at all. I have enough income, without working, that I exceeded what they required.

Thanks for all the replies. The biggest hassle for me was the requirement to have a 1 year contract in place for renting a place.

I turned all the paperwork in today. Everything looked good.
