My wife and I have taken out Residence during our stay in 2020 and we currently have small white cards. I understand many people are now being issued with a TIE. Is our card no longer accepted as evidence of residence? Should we return as soon as possible and obtain a new document? Any guidance would be most welcome. Thank you.

I've never seen a small white residency card. Ours was issued as a green credit card size. I think you might need to update it.

Hi jimsan
Can you post a photo of the “small white residency card” Members might better assist.
You ask if you should return. Are you currently not in Spain? 🤪🥂

Hi jimsan,
As Tebo53 has said, the residency cards prior to the TIE were green credit-card sized. If you're not able to post a photo (with personal details redacted) would you be able to tell us what it says on the card - for example, is it titled, "Certificado de Residencia"? Does it include your NIE number? Does it have issue and expiry dates? Anything else that you think would be useful to help us identify what you were issued with last year. Also, when did you apply for it? I assume it was before 6 July, as after that date you would have applied for a TIE.
The good news is that Spain has not mandated a deadline by when people with old-style residency certificates must exchange them for a TIE, but given that you've said yours is white rather than green, it would be good to know that you have the correct document.
As an aside, but it could be related, the NIE is your unique tax ID and some people apply for that at the same time as residency; this may be why the Spanish, in particular, often refer to "residencia" as "NIE", despite them being two different documents. I'm wondering whether there may be a new-style NIE document (it used to be a white A4 document) which you've been issued, rather than a residency card.
If you don't mind providing more detail, I'm sure we can help.
Kind regards,
Kim

I’m not sure if this has an impact on your 2020 residency but I understand that in your first year of residency that you are not allowed to be out of the country for more than 90days and no more than 365 days during first 5years is that incorrect?
Regards
Jeff

In your first 5 years of residency, you can't leave Spain for more than 182 days (6 months) per year. Once you've lived here for 5 years and so have achieved 'residencia permanente', you can leave for up.to 2 years. There is also an exception for extreme circumstances, such as caring for a sick relative.
Kind regards,
Kim
Hello jimsan
You've had a few replies and several questions have been asked - it would be really good if you updated us on your current status & what type of card you have, I am certainly curious about your white card.
. Feedback is always useful in situations like this, it clarifies things for others & could be helpful to you too.
Cheers

Hello and thank you for your contact. I did make a mistake with the colour, my wife says it was a small green colour and without a photo on it. The document states CERTIFICADO DE REGISTRO DE CIUDADANO DE LA UNION El encargado del registro Central de Extranjeros certifica que: followed by my name. It was issued in February 2020.
I hope this information is helpful.
Thank you

Hi jimsan,
That's good to hear! As I said previously, Spain has not yet mandated a deadline by when people with old-style residency certificates (green cards) must exchange them for a TIE. However, if you do want to make the exchange, please see my guide on how to do it yourself for the cost of €12 per person:
Alternatively, you could engage a gestor to help you, for which I think the average cost is €120.
Kind regards,
Kim

Hello jimsan,
Thank you for your reply. Although there is no deadline for exchanging your green card for a TIE as explained by Kimmy, you did ask if you should " return a.s.a.p. to obtain your new card" so I assume you are in the UK. Just reminding you, in case you weren't aware, that you can be out of Spain for no more than 182 days per year in your first 5years of residency'
