I found this link on i on line news. I'm not a subscriber so can't read the whole article but I think the title and first 2 paragraphs say it all.

Can’t see it happening as the article states it would need to be an EU wide decision.

Countries are free to introduce their own visas on different terms, France have done it too, they are not a way to bypass the Schengen 90 day rule though.

So if other Shengen countries can introduce their own terms why can't Spain.? Why do they have to bow down to Brussels when the other countries haven't? It seems Spain is passing the buck and using Brussels as an excuse.

Because they choose not to and in any case it wouldn't help those who simply want to stay over 90 days.

Because Spain is happy with the rules otherwise they would change them . Its only UK citizens who are not happy with the Schengen 90 day rule.

Spain's own decision. Can't blame them for that. UK Gov is the culprit on this one.
