Impossible to predict. Controls can be set up anywhere at any time even after having passed the border.

Possible but has anyone ever been so stopped and checked, I very much doubt it!

As both Spain and France are part of the Schengen area, there are no border checks. Your only delays and checks will be getting into France, i.e. your entry point to the Schengen area.

Yes, we have been stopped twice!  Once at the border and once further up approaching Poitiers.  One time, whilst inspecting the vehicle the official asked my husband most officiously why he was sitting in the passenger seat to which my husband replied “because this is the side the steering wheel is on”.  He hadnt realised the car was Rhd.  We did giggle.

There are no border controls on the french/spanish border (or between any schengen countries). I have driven across several times, you only know you have crossed because the road signs change from french to spanish at la jonqera (the border). In France in particular you may be stopped randomly as the gendarmerie seem keen to check foreign cars and if travelling on minor roads watch out for speed checks going theough towns and villages.
