Hi everyone. We are considering buying a small place here for the winters, likely in the Jalon or Orba Valleys. My biggest worry is that we have 2 lovely staffies, one 18 years old and the other 8. Having spent a few weeks here now I’ve only seen 2 staffies and am aware of the restrictions placed on them and the licensing process I will have to go through. Both dogs would always be on lead. Does anyone else have staffies or are we going to be frowned upon / social pariahs?! I wouldn’t take them into towns but obviously will need to walk them somewhere. I also wouldn’t want to upset the locals as we’re visitors in their country. Any advice, thoughts, previous experience would be hugely welcomed. Thank you!

Hi there is a thread on this that you may find helpful. If you type in the search bar ‘Dangerous dogs’ and in the box that says area type ‘everywhere’ it will bring up a number of posts, scroll down to ‘Dangerous or not’ it’s on page 1 second from last. Don’t be put off by what you read. Whilst I’m not a full time Resident, I’ve been bringing my English Bull Terrier every year since 2007, sadly he passed away at Christmas 🙁. I have never, in all that time had anyone, Spanish or otherwise say anything, infact it’s been quite the opposite, my neighbours adored him. Just stick to the rules and I’m sure you will get along just fine 😊

we have lived here for 9 years and have seen lots of staffies, and some in bars (especially our friends one) and none of them have been muzzled, but must be on lead.

The thread Cathy's referring to is:

Dangerous dog or not?

Don't bother at all about the locals - they're more likely to wonder why you've got a dog on a lead!

From my experience, it seems that most Spaniards just ignore the legislation about 'dangerous' dogs, but I do suggest that you comply and register them.

I recognise that legislation is at times necessary, and I wouldn't encourage anyone to ignore it, but my personal experience is that 'dangerous' dogs that have been looked after properly are no problem at all, whereas I have occasionally suffered wounds from non-dangerous dogs that are just being over-friendly. The last instance was from sharp claws of one of the cocker spaniels of our Spanish friend - blood dripping all over the place!

Firstly, I’m so sorry to hear you lost your lovely boy last year. You obviously gave him a wonderful life and loved him very, very much. No dog can ask for better than that.

Thank you so much for the helpful advice. I’ll read up but it sounds as if I don’t have too much to worry about as long as we follow the rules.

Thanks again!

Thank you, Jim. It does sound as if we don’t have too much to worry about as long as we follow the rules, which is very good news. There’s a lot of breed discrimation against staffies even in the UK so I was just beginning to fear we were going to make life even more difficult for ourselves here. I feel reassured!

Yes, I quite agree that the so called “dangerous dogs” are often the least dangerous of all! 🙂

Thank you again!

Despite what Jim said, in the general area here most people keep their dogs on leads in towns and villages and that is expected.

The public are much more informed about the dangers here since a man was mauled to death last year near Benidoleig. Please don't take offence - I'm not suggesting your dogs would do that, simply pointing out that there is more safety awareness since that incident. The owner had kept dogs unchipped and unlicensed and is now in custody awaiting trial.

If you walk them off the lead in the countryside no one will complain. However if you walk them off the lead in built up areas you can expect complaints.

Good luck with your move!

I have a wonderful 4yr Blue Staff. They are classed as dangerous dogs in most of Europe ie. France and Spain. They should be on a lead and muzzled whenever out and registered with your local town hall. However, in reality nearly all I've seen are just on a lead (ours won't tolerate a muzzle - just rips it off and himself in the process). Those that know staffs love him and those that don't tend not to like dogs full stop. Hope that helps
