Hi I am not a Spanish resident but have a holiday home in spain. Like many others on the forum I cant wait to get back out there but appreciate that this has to wait. I have two questions to ask. I have a car parked at Alicante airport awaiting my return - I have as required by Spanish law renewed my car insurance - however based on general opinions expressed on this forum my car could be there until September or later so at least 6 months of my premium will to some degree have been wasted - has anybody heard whether insurers in spain have given discounts/refunds on insurance premiums ?

also whenever I get to spain I will need to drive my car and its itv will have expired - I will before I come out arrange an itv at the local centre in ondara - If I have proof of this will this be sufficient if I get stopped by the guardia ?

thanks for any help and keep safe

Hi,

Very quickly, regarding:

".........so at least 6 months of my premium will to some degree have been wasted - has anybody heard whether insurers in spain have given discounts/refunds on insurance premiums ?"

You are not "wasting", your premium, as it needs to be legally insured, certainly in the situation of where it´s parked. Hence no discount.

Regarding ITV.....At the moment there has been a waiver during the pandemic. You will need to revise that as the "fases" move on towards September.

Hope helps.

The insurance you'll have to suck up I'm afraid, even parked up at the airport as far as an insurer is concerned it's still on risk.

It is possible to temporarily remove a car from the road which would then allow the insurance to be cancelled but it's a pularva and not something you can do remotely.

You'd also have to reverse the process when you came back which might take some days so really not a practical option.

As long as the ITV expired during the lockdown you can drive the car but must renew it at the earliest opportunity.

https://www.healthplanspain.com/blog/expat-tips/925-driving-in-spain-during-the-coronavirus-lockdown.html

This states that there will be a 30 day grace period from the end of lockdown. The problem could be how "lockdown" is interpreted. Will it be from when those already in Spain can go about their normal business or when borders are open and we are in the new normal, whatever that may be? Residents may be able to get their cars ITV'd before borders are open and May 25th is the date proposed for officialdom to restart so there is a possibility that you may have to get the car transported to the ITV station

This suggests contacting your insurer to reduce the level of cover.

In the meantime, keep up to date on the DGT site

At some stage they will be able to deal with individual inquiries. I doubt you will be the only one in this situation so fingers crossed that this is considered and allowances made.

If you have your car at Alicante Airport with one of the companies that do drop off and collect you could check with the company as some of them do car servicing and ITV preparation and would take it to the Centre for the Test. That way your car would have its ITV when you are eventually able to get back to Spain.
