Hi

We're moving to Spain from the UK in a month or so.  My mobile phone contract is up for renewal and I'm wondering what if I should upgrade my phone and contract here or wait until I get to Spain.  The trouble is I've called a few companies here in the UK and they've all stated that after a few months in Spain my SIM card will stop working unless I return to UK on a regular basis.  I've not heard of anyone else having this problem or has that been the case for some people? They basically said it may not get cut off at all but there is a chance that it would. I did tell them I would still have a UK address and UK bank but it made no difference. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks

Hi Louise,

We moved here permanently in Feb this year. We were both with EE in the UK and were each told individually by EE that we could only keep our contracts for 3 months if we were not returning to the UK even though we still have bank accounts in the UK. I'm not sure what would have happened after the 3 months as we both took out SIM only contracts within the first 3 months of our arrival in Spain and contacted EE to cancel our contracts with them. Regards, Russ

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

We are moving permanently in October but have done almost the same as Kimmy11.  Except that my phone has my giffgaff sim in it, which I pay £5 pm and I have a Spanish masmovil sim in it too, paying 5 euros pm. Also have TV Horadada as Kimmy11 states.

Will be seeing how my giffgaff goes over the next year but at the moment intend to keep it.

That's interesting. I didn't realise you could have two sims in a mobile. Is it a special phone?

The roam like at home system where you can use your package in other European countries is subject to a fair usage policy. This is to protect operators from people buying a contract in the cheapest country and using it in their own.

As stated in some of these replies they can stop your service or start charging you standard roaming rates.

not special phone = Motorola G4 play ……..think most phones take 2 sims …….. each time send text or call, if don't allocate to particular sim, it asks which number you want to send/call from …….

Thanks Mandy. I have had a Samsung GT-5830i for many years. Just looked at the manual and it doesn't mention taking 2 sims. I'll think about getting a new phone, as it would save me having to carry 2 phones all the time. You've given me food for thought!

Hi Shiela

My hubby and I both have Samsung Note 4 mobiles which are dual sim which we bought off ebay. Most mobiles only take 1 sim and especially in Uk very difficult to get dual sim phones. You may find it easier in Spain to get 1, or from internet, or the shopping channels have them frequently for about the £100, but these are not the well known branded makes but as I had one for 2 yrs before dying I would not be against buying again. Look on Amazon too, search "dual sim mobile" and yes its perfect for not having to carry 2 phones or charging 2 phones, also knowing you are able to use either sim at any time or receive msgs from either sim. I have a Tesco mobile and a Spanish Hits sim in mine.

Good Luck

Pauline.
