Has anyone else had this notice from Barclaycard?

It does not make any economic sense for them to do this surely? I checked my account on line and this is the reply I got from an email they sent out to me?

In regards to your concern I am sorry to learn that you have receive a notification which suggests that your account will be closed. Please note, as per the recent changes we are contacting all our customers who have an address in the European Economic Area (EEA) to let them know that we’ll be closing their Barclaycard accounts. The EEA address could be held on the Barclaycard account itself or on any other products you hold with Barclays.

If you can update your address to a UK address on all products held with Barclays before we close your account, then you can keep your Barclaycard account open.

If you can’t do this, you’ll be able to continue to use your card (if it’s in order) until Friday 23 October, when it’ll be blocked.
Accounts will be closed on Monday 16 November and you will need to repay any outstanding balance until it’s fully repaid.

I would request you to please review all products you have with Barclays and make sure it has a UK address on it.

Please accept my sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused to you.

Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind Regards,

Is this a scam? Or is it a repercussion of Brexit or am I thick and cant understand the financial prospects for Barclaycard to make this decision?

Please come back to me with any ideas?

Thank you.

I did wonder if (or when) banks and credit card companies might start backing off non UK resident customers.

Not sure how they stand in pursuing unpaid debts in the post Brexit era.

I think the looming prospect of no deal is making them very nervous.

I had the same email. I haven't used my Barclaycard for some years so I'm not really bothered if they close the account.

Yep, got an email yesterday.   Bit surprised and saddened but decided not to take any action.  Another Brexit casualty.

This post that was quoted has been deleted.

Thank you Nicola...I can see your point regarding the way the notice is drafted...punctuation...abbreviation and wording. It does make it appear very scam like.

On the other hand when I went on my online account ....that same email was listed in my messages. That made me think it must be genuine???  Everything else on my account looked correct in terms of recent purchases etc...any ideas what o should do please? I am concerned...

Thank you

.

Hi tigerdon,

This isn't a scam, of course, anyone who has a Barclaycard account will know that correctly written abbreviations are a usual part of their communication style.  As you said, you checked your online account and so this reply would have come through your Secure Messaging and a typo from a Customer Services representative is not uncommon.  Had the message been an unsolicited email direct to your email address, that would be a cause for concern.

Unfortunately, this is another casualty of Brexit.  The issue of UK banks, and the Financial Services' sector generally, losing "passporting" rights, which allow them to serve EU customers, has been a known issue since 2017 (although the then Chancellor, Philip Hammond, had to have it drawn to his attention by Nicky Morgan, MP, Chair of the Commons Treasury select committee!).

Some financial services companies took early action.  For example, when I became aware of the issue, I wrote to Transferwise about my account with them and they advised me that they were opening an office in Brussels, so that they could continue to trade in the EU.  Interestingly, Barclays also started restructuring in 2018, moving ownership of their entities in Germany (where its Barclaycard business is based), France and Spain to their Irish subsidiary, but ultimately, their European companies are owned by Barclays' London Stock Exchange-listed holding company.  This one isn't an issue for me, as I own a UK property, but it does make you wonder how many other institutions and companies in the UK Financial Services' sector will be writing to clients who don't have a UK address, now that "no deal" appears to have shifted from "looking more likely" to a "dead cert"..........  :o(

Kind regards,

Kim
