Hi,

Great group for info,im new, thanks for adding me 🙏

We're just finalising buying our holiday home and im frustrated at the bank charges,I havnt opened a spanish bank account yet, bankia want €14 per month....."nuevo por 2020" rates!!!

We have euro accounts and would only need a spanish bank account to pay essential utility bills so I cannot justify paying those banking charges.

Can anyone tell me,when I get my NIE next week if its possible to pay my water, electricity and IBI tax ,do any of the service providers INSIST on payment from spanish bank or can I send from my irish euro bank account either by transfer or direct debit? Thanks for any advice xx

I am in the midst of moving my direct debits from Bankia to my Transferwise euro account, their bank account is based in Belgium, none of the utility companies saw this as a problem.

I believe as long as it is a euro based account you will be fine.

Thanks all,it sounds like it should be possible.

I was being lead to understand that certain bills or tax could only be paid from a spanish bank account, this dosnt make sense as I have a euro account and live in the eurozone.

I will update the outcome as I get it,im sure too many people are paying unnecessary bank charges.

I am interested in how you get on with this. We were told by the estate agent that you have to have a bank account in Spain. However they are probably told to say this to potential buyers. They all seem to be so greedy!

Same here. Was hoping to be able to use something like my Starling Euro account

You can use your Starling Euro account as it provides an IBAN number. I have this too.

None of the utility companies asked any questions when I gave them my IBAN for my Transferwise account for future direct debits and their account is based in Belgium.

The Starling account is excellent but in your case not strictly necessary to pay direct debits as you already have a Euro account.

Yes you can use your Irish euro bank account for payments and direct debits in Spain. I do this for all my payments in Spain. All eurozone countries are part of SEPA (Single European Payment Area) and are required to accept euro denominated accounts in one another’s countries. Sometimes in a country you may face institutions that initially refuse but accept once you ask them to check. However, in Spain I didn’t face any issues or queries.
