Last year we received a large water bill, 580 euro. We were told there was a water leak. There was no leak. We where billed for 200,000 liters of water. Despite our protests the money was taken from our account.
It has just happened to another household on the urbanisation, nice little earner!
You can only be billed by what your meter says and being simple mechanical devices they can only indicate actual consumption or under, never over.
Insurance policies may cover the cost of fixing a leak but I think it will be a rare one which reimbourses the cost of water lost.
I don't know about Spain but in France in there is a law which prevents water companies from charging customers more than 20% above normal historic usage, wish that had been in play when a major leak cost me €700!

I had the same last year. I had a pool leak well more than once really which cost me about 1200 euros plus the cost of refilling the pool once the work was done!I wasn’t in Spain at the time. When I did get back I had a message posted through the letter box saying about the water leak and to check it out. However they didn’t even turn the water off. From the date on the post it was left to leak for another 3 weeks........ fantastic. The second leak was on the pipework main running from the meter to the property. Another 800 euros. I had the same note through the door. I complained but got nowhere.....absolute arseholes!
I now always turn the water off at the main and have disconnected my pool auto fill.

If you had no water leak,either your meter has been mis read or the only other option is,somebody has borrowed your meter ?

The first water bill we got after buying our apartment was over €300 we had no leak, the water was turned off at the main point. I went to their office & waited 2 hrs to speak to someone only to be told that our toilet was running constantly or that someone had been using our sink on the roof we didn’t get anywhere so now when we turn water off we photograph the meter reading seems to be the usual con trick by them.
