Opening a spanish bank account

Can anyone tell me please if you need a NIE to open an account in Spain. Asking for a friend who visits often with a view to buying a property eventually. TIA

There was a report recently on this forum of someone opening an account with Sabadell without needing an NIE.
I really don't understand this. Banks have to report account information to the tax agency, and to do that they need an NIE number.
If it's a non-resident account, they also need a certificate of non-residence, and will get that themselves for a fee but, again, this needs an NIE number.

I opened my account with Sabadell last April with just my passport. I am non-resident and was looking to buy a property. I was later asked for my UK National Insurance number which allows them to establish that I am a UK resident for tax purposes.

We opened a non resident bank account last month before we obtained our NIE numbers with Sabadell bank and they were extremely helpful, it changes to a resident bank account when we obtain our Residencia.

Hi guys, thanks for all your replies which are really helpful. We have our NIE’s and yeh...had to give bank of UK NI number at a later stage. My friend is going to be over in Spain for two weeks this month. I will tell him to make sure he has his NI. number with him and hopefully this will allow him to open an account until he can get an NIE.

We opened a bank account with Banco Sabadell & have debit cards, we didn't need an NIE.
