How long does a car battery normally last?  My Bosch battery lasted just 5 years and I have just had to replace it at a cost of 356€.  I am sure that when I lived in UK batteries lasted a lot longer. I would welcome some thoughts on it please.

According to Bosch Service there are many reasons to indicate whether your battery needs a replacement or not; here are some:

1. Natural Wear & Tear: The battery's limited lifespan typically ranges from 2 to 5 years.

2. Build-up at the terminals: Any build-up of lead sulphate crystals around the battery terminals reduces the battery's ability to hold a charge.

3. Environmental Factors: Extreme hot and cold temperatures can impact battery performance. Car Battery's exposure to harsh conditions can accelerate deterioration.

4. Manufacturing Defects: Internal issues or defects in the manufacturing process may lead to the early breakdown of the battery.

5. Inadequate Maintenance: Lack of regular maintenance, such as checking voltage, cleaning terminals, and monitoring fluid levels, can shorten battery life.

For info, seems batteries have shorter life span in hotter climates.

That is what I was thinking.  In the UK I never had to get a new one after only 5 years.

I thought I was being ripped off for 285 euro for a new Mercedes battery in my 5 year old car. Looking at comments on MB World etc, if you have the start/stop function (which I have) turn it off when driving round towns or in traffic. Seriously reduces battery life while saving about a cupful of fuel a year. I also find it a pain as it turns off when I stop at a roundabout.

Thanks for that advice.  I will turn mine off.

I have been driving a Seat Altea here since 2018, it belonged to my daughter in the UK, purchased new in 2012. It still has the original battery with the mileage now at just over 87,000miles/140,000k. So roughly half its life in UK weather, half in "hot" Spanish weather.

In the UK I had a battery fail on a 2020 Mazda CX-30, after about 4 years, mileage under15,000 miles at the time.

Seems there may be a bit of luck involved in battery life expectancy!

I had a 2016 E class with a seperate, auxillary stop/start battery. I had to replace that battery twice, around £50 a time (or £120 you wanted an original part from MB). The MB service agent did tell me it is better with the new model E class as they have the stop/start function built into the main battery. Clearly not the case from your experience.

Digressing but if you have a diesel merc be very wary of issues with NOX sensors. Google the issue or look on MB owners site. I got rid of my Merc because of the problems/costs I had with these sensors, not just limited to e class either.

Rgds,
