So already having to change plans because of Brexit to looking at purchasing a holiday home rather than a permanent residence. However after reading this article looks like any purchase is going to be a long process.

It depends entirely on where you decide to buy a property as only certain areas are included.  From the info I have seen the only part of the Alicante Province affected by the law is the coastal area south of Torrevieja (and possibly some/all of Torrevieja, as one map included it and another didn't!).  The whole of the Mar Menor area and Murcia coastline are in the military zone too.

So best option would be to consider location options at the moment.  There is some rumour that the law wont apply to Brits long-term due to both UK and Spain being in NATO, but the Spanish government have much higher priorities to deal with than this at the moment, so I can't see anything changing quickly.  The matter of this law being reviewed or revoked was raised a few years ago so at some time it will be looked at in the future I am sure.

Hi, thanks for your reply. It will certainly narrow options down somewhat if this law was to be applied but from what you say it doesn't sound like it is being at the moment.  Not only will this affect buyers there is the knock on effect to the sellers with sales taking much longer.

With the affect of Brexit and now this law rearing its head I can see even more owners trying to sell up but with less buyers.

What a crazy world we're living in at the moment.
