How do I get a visa to travel from Spain to UK?

I hold a German passport even though I was married in UK and lived there for 50+ years.

I am now resident of Spain and have not been back to UK since Brexit.  I was now told by a friend that I need a visa to visit UK?

I would be grateful for any information.

You don't need a visa to visit UK as EU passport holders travel visa free.

As from April this year, you will need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) if you are a non UK citizen without a UK passport. You can apply for one from the ETA App site which also explains the procedure, the cost, how to pay and how long it is valid for (multiple entries up to 2 years or until your passport expires). The UK gov site shows which nationalities can enter with an ETA.

The ETA is similar to the ESTA to visit the US and to the ETIAS which will be required for all non EU citizens to visit the EU from October.

Countries requiring a visa (none of the EU ones) will still require a visa for visits to UK and the ETA does not cancel this requirement.

Just a comment of the ETIAS date, the latest I have seen is that the EU expect ETAIS to be required from October 2026. They expect EES to begin in October this year with a phased roll out.

EES rollout has been planned every year since 2022 so maybe this will be the year it happens!
