I am in a similar position to yourself, I think initially I will buy just one of these units and take it over to Spain in September, I think I would rather test for compatibility before purchasing any extra units.

There is also another company that make these, Ecosense but they are more expensive and the units are not as well camouflaged, I like the idea of the sensor being hidden inside a PIR.

If you do this any time soon would you mind reporting back and let us know your experiences ?

Hi Marie,

The room sensors are a clever and convenient way of controlling equipment but do require a certain bit of Electrical knowhow to install. 

They are ideal for private residences or Commercial, Industrial ,premises . I will not go into detail here , but it must be said if used in rented properties they are very very easily bypassed ,enabling the equipment they control to be used continuously without interruption.

I think the 1 euro  coin operated unit that can be installed by an Electrician is the most convenient and practical method for your requirements.

Whilst I agree with you, the sensors that I provided a link to are housed in a pir alarm type housing, now I know that some renters may suss this out but I wouldn't think that everyone would and therefore if they work with 50% of the renters they would still be providing a saving, not just on the electricity used but saving the wear and tear on the units themselves continually running, also you would have to factor in how much you actually do rent out.

The risk of bypassing is one for each individual to asses and your suggestion is certainly one to consider.

Coin operated units would also, obviously require routine emptying, but a trusted keyholder or neighbour could provide this service.

Thanks for the reply.  I did consider charging for use of the air con, but I find that guests tend to resent that, so I am going to go with the timer, which is wireless so should be easy to install - I will post to let you know how it works.

Yes the coin meters are an option but they do not allow the unit to shut down in a controlled manner, they just pull the power.

I saw this for myself in May when we rented a private villa in Lanzarote, the money ran out, the unit stopped with the vents wide open, they were also like that on our arrival.

I have spoken to a couple of ac engineers in the past who pointed this out to me and then witnessed it in May.
