What is going on in Orihuela Costa?  Garbage that is not on the black containers is not being collected. Its getting really disgusting, its an adventure to get to the bin trying to avoid all the rest around it.

Then there is this little plane flying low, making noise every day there is some sunshine. Probably a school, but cant they find another place to fly? Have contacted by mail 2 schools near Alicante, no answer. Does anybody know whom to contact?

Hi, re the garbage situation - there was a thread recently that covered this - look up "why are things deteriorating".

Plus look at - https://www.costa-news.com/latest-news/race-against-clock-to-repair-costa-refuse-trucks/

The planes that fly about around Orihuela Costa are most likely training planes from the Spanish airbase at San Javier, the old international airport in Murcia. They have been raised on here a few times in the past. Sometimes they are more annoying than others.

The garbage problem is that people leave bags and other rubbish by the bins and the garbage collection trucks are one-man operated. The driver doesn't get out out of the truck, there is a winch that picks up the bin and empties it into the truck. So anything left at the side of the road stays there.

There is a collection service for large items but it doesn't always function properly and that is the town hall's responsibility.

Bags of rubbish and random items left at the bin is a problem caused by residents and tourists just dumping stuff and walking away.

The garbage problems that I saw when I was in Spain were due to the fact that the bins were overflowing and not emptied with enough frequency. I returned to the UK at the end of  October, the problem was still there even though the numbers of visitors had gone down significantly.

The other issues are large amounts of garden waste and household goods such as mattresses, old white goods, old TV's, etc, etc, none of which could be blamed on tourists in my opinion.

Orihuela government have not renewed the garbage collection contract since Feb 2022, nor have they renewed the contract to service and/or replace the lorries, which means less lorries on the road and as a result less collections. If you are resident, and if you qualify, there are local elections coming up, and you should make your voices heard.

Re the elections, read the articles from the Leader newspaper below:

For any resident who wants to improve the situation in Orihuela Costa then they have a opportunity to vote in local representatives.

Well said, residents getting out to vote is the only way we can change the imbalance in how much of our taxes are spent on Orihuela City and how much is spent on the coast. Given the number living on the coast if everyone who can vote does we would have some councillors who can speak up for us. No good complaining if you are not prepared to exercise your right to vote. It's so easy to vote we live in Villamartin and went to the care home between La Fuentes and Los Dolses when we voted in 2019. Don't ever think your vote doesn't count it does.
