Hi Geoff,

We have ours running for 8 hours in "swim season", although it's rarely more than my husband and I using it on a day to day basis.  The pump runs from 8am to 12 noon and 4pm to 8pm.  We have friends who do the same thing, but they run the second 4-hour period during the night, to take advantage of the off-peak electricity.  I seem to remember Jim Taylor saying that some pool chemicals are activated by sunlight, so I think he recommended the pump being run during daylight hours.  Here's a link to his guide:

Kind regards,

Kim
