Last year we had Oil central heating fitted Boiler and 7 radiators. My husband admits he doesn't know a lot about central heating, I on the other hand have had central heating all my life bringing up a family and with kids in and out have always had the heating on albeit on a timer.

We have the system on approx. 5 hours in the evening, off all night, 3 hours on the morning through the winter, I get irate because when I got to the bathroom or  bedroom the rads have been turned off or an attempt by him been made to turn those rads down, but he's not  found the right spot yet. He is constantly bleeding the rads.  I keep insisting 'its called central heating leave it on'. Also as we save water when we shower,  he will insist on boiling the saved water on the gas stove in a saucepan for washing up, therefore the hot water in the central heating doesn't get used much. We argue over this almost daily as I think keep turning individual radiator valves up and down is not good for them . Please can someone help solve our problems and give advice.

This is a new husband hence I had the children, he did not have the central heating. Next step Judge Rinder possible divorce, prospective new husbands need not apply.

Tie his hands behind his back and only release them when you are around  him ! 😀.

Apologies for the humorous reply Flamcalady , the way in which you described gour predicament was so graphic and did touch a funny bone in Me.

On a more serious note, I can understand your frustration and agree it is something that should be sorted out somehow,

Could I maybe suggest you try and get into conversation over the issue, with friends or neighbours and see if their routine over the central heating operation can maybe convince him of the correct useage of it in your home.

Hopefully others on the forum can give other ideas.

Good luck, and please keep up updated on your progress

Mars and Venus!
Why don't you use it as you like it for a week or a month then grit your teeth and let him have his way for the same period and see what difference there is consumption wise and then decide if it is worthwhile calling in the lawyers.

Thank you for serious advice, it seems not a lot of folks have central heating as lots of holiday homes about. I was hoping perhaps a retired central heating chappie might give advice. Sorry to go on but I’m not happy house thermostat is all it’s cracked up to be. Maybe hubby needs a new wife with less intelligence in manly (sexist) issues. Happy New Year!

Thank you Cheryl, tried that but he doesn’t last two days even then it’s back to turned off rads, drives me mad, for my part I am  such a chilly person I’d have it on continuous and blow the costs. We shall no doubt battle on, good job I love him.

Flamencalady, practical  user advice to improve room thermostat control of heating  can only suggest ( if not already fitted ),is the addition of individual automatic Thermostatic radiator valves plus a fully programmable 24hr/7day programmer.

Bearing in mind the construction of Spanish homes in terms of poor heat retention ,then Providing you have a modern energy efficient boiler ,draughproof exterior doors and double glazing ,then I cant think of much else that could be done.

Thanks Les yes a trip to Leroy is next step re individual valves provided their easily installed, not so sure about room  thermostat as it has to talk to boiler, not so easy.

Flamencalady, you are most welcome.  The TVRs, if fitted,  will greatly improve the controllability of your heating system, and well worth that trip to Leroy Merlin 👍.

I am no central heating Engineer and have no knowledge of the type of boiler you have installed, but in general.....

On the issue of the room thermostat/ programmer-timer . These are now available in hard wired version, I.e. requiring cabling back to the boiler, and also radio controlled, I.e, no wiring required between the room unit and the boiler ,merely a reciever unit wired into the boiler controls

It is only the ultra modern systems of  'Smart' wifi system of central heating control which requires the unit to 'talk' to the boiler,

Hope that helps.
