You don't say if you are taking the ferry to France or Spain but either way you can plot your route on this site and it depends how many tolls you want to avoid.

Make sure you have your UK sticker.

There are a number of routes and I'm sure you will get quite a few recommendations.

We have always driven from Calais, through Rouen, Bourdeaux, Zaragoza and then on to Ontinyent. It works for us really well, but we decided on a change in Feb this year and chose to go through Paris, just for a bit of variety. What a bloody nightmare.

I would rather walk from Calais to Ontinyent, barefoot over broken glass, than drive through Paris again.

Just my opinion though.

If you look for the site Drive France that will give you various  routes depending on how long you want to drive and whether your happy to pay road tolls ( expensive in France) it also shows hotels close to the route for overnight stops with many options from budget to 5 star . You will then find the link on there for drive Spain to continue your journey ,we’ve used this many times when we used to drive here before moving permanently. I’m sure you’ll find it useful we’ve always used the Lille/Montpellier route into Spain then it’s very straightforward down to Costa Blanca . Good luck

We have driven to our home in Punta Prima via the tunnel, through France and Spain and also via Ferry from Plymouth

We would definitely recommend the ferry, as the difference in cost between tunnel and ferry is negligible when taking into account the cost of driving through France (fuel, tolls, hotel for one night, food and refreshments). The ferry was a delight in comparison, overnight stay with entertainment, reasonably priced food and our 2 bed cabin met our basic needs. We wished we had taken our plug adapter to our cabin so that we could charge our phones. Maybe there are USB's now? Although it is only 2yrs since we travelled via ferry.

We just used google maps on our phone for both journeys (route mapped out from our home in the North West of England). We specified no tolls when we travelled by ferry, and definitely used tolls when travelling via France.

From Santander it was approximately a 9hr drive to our house in Punta Prima

I hope that is helpful

We just arrived last night after following more or less the same route as Rob mentioned. We were booked on 9.20am channel shuttle, but given a space on 8.50. Arrived in at Bordeaux Holiday Inn Express in Bordeaux after eating locally around 8.30pm. Left Bordeaux at 8am and arrived in Torrevieja at 7.30pm. Would have been 30 minutes earlier but for heavy rush hour traffic around Bordeaux and hailstones and torrential rain in Valencia.

Have done the Ferry to Santander, but the last time we found the cabin was really filthy. We were due to travel back from Santander, but they cancelled the ferry on the morning of our departure, so had to drive through France as the next ferry with available cabin space was 2 weeks later. No compensation or real apology, so will never use them again.

Glad you arrived safely

I have noted your ferry experience, as I have only done one return trip and all was good, so nothing else to compare it too. Thank you
