Hi Guys, I hope you don't mind me sending a message, I'm hoping to buy a holiday home close to Gandia, I've been twice now looking at various villages and found some lovely houses but not the perfect house in the perfect village (I know it's not exactly going to be perfect but.. ) we looked at Oliva, Piles, Miramar, La font d'en Carros and Villagona and Denia, my problem will all except Denia & Villalonga was the lack of restaurants and places to eat/coffee shops etc. Also in La font the bars were very male populated which intimated me a little.  We didn't visit Pego on our trips and wondering is there nice places to eat etc. Also worried about the gypsy areas? (I know I perhaps shouldn't worry.. ) would you have any advice on buying in Pego? I.e. Distance to beach (is Oliva the nearest?) bus services, would you need a car? Restaurants/places to eat? Areas to stay away from etc. Swimming pool etc. Is Pego in the mountains likes Villalonga?

Any help welcome!!

Hi Paula

Pego is lovely , I have an apartment there. But haven't spent a lot of time there yet , mostly there doing it up.

But Pego has lots of eating areas , this village isn't full of tourist ,

In the morning you can watch the life style of the community , early morning the workers gravitate to the cafe for breakfast , then about 9 the towns seniors gather on their Zimmer frames and walking sticks and sit out for a coffee and a chat before heading to do the daily shop .

Lunch time I enjoy sitting on the central area shaded with trees for lunch ( this area really comes to life at night when every one gathers to eat chat or just for a drink , never seen trouble . but the locals  are lovely . The tourist office at the roundabout as you are entering the town   Is full of lots of info. There is a sports facility , tennis and swimming , but haven't used them yet .

The transport could be an issue , there are a few buses per day , but very few .

I will try and email you the timetable . Taxis I can send you some numbers ( but once again I haven't needed to use them ) other say they can be costly .but I cannot verify that.

The nearest beach that I know is in the direction of El Vergel and off to your left ... from Pego.

In the car it's about 10 K.

There is a cycle route if you are feeling fit and have a bike .

It's a big decision , it would be best to stay in Pego for a few days to find out if it's what you are looking for.

The town has an old part , small but beautiful.

Hope this helps

Hi there,

There is an indoor pool in a sports centre in Pego,  in a side road near Aldi. There is also a really lovely outdoor pool in Adsubia, about 3ks out of Pego, but it is open only in July and August, unfortunately. There are no buses to the beach from Pego (as far as I know). We go to the beach down from the Equestrian Centre on what is classed as the Oliva Nova Resort, but it is south of the big Oliva Nova hotel and golf club. I think it is marked as the  San Fernando Multiservicios area on Google Maps. It is about 12 mins by car from Pego, so it is closer than the main Oliva beach and might even be a bit closer than the El Vergel beach the other responder mentioned.

I would come and stay a couple of nights in Pego so you can see what it is like. There are a couple of very pretty-looking guest houses on booking.com. I don't know the owners and I haven't stayed at either, but they look beautiful. There is also Casa Rural in Adsubia, which you can find if you Google it.

If you join Ladies of Spain Facebook page you can then ask for advice from people living in Pego - there are quite a few English residents in the town. We live on the edge of town in what is classed as the campo.

Pego sits in a bowl, if you like, which is edged with mountains, so you have plenty of views if you are located in the right place and the house is facing the right way! I would find living here without a car extremely tricky, but many do and arrange their lives accordingly. Pego Town council offers two years (Oct-May) of Spanish language classes free of charge.

There really is too much to say in a message like this. It would take me  ages to type everything that I feel is relevant. If you wish, send me a private message and we can exchange tel nos and you can call me if you want to.

Best wishes.

Sue
