I am looking for recommendations for good Private Healthcare Providers as i am under the age of 65 and do not qualify for the State Health service via the S1.

Also as I am new to the area, I am not sure if i have to register at a local healthcare clinic and whether my Insurance covers everything required at that clinic.

I have healthcare cover with Salus at the moment but feel it is very expensive and not very flexible with its "Directory" of clinics I am supposed to use.

Any Advice or feedback from members with experience would be most appreciated.

Thanks Trevor

I don't think your situation is unusual.

My wife and I have our health insurance with DKV. My wife became seriously ill last year, and DKV have been absolutely fantastic.

BUT we have had to travel to obtain treatment and tests, mostly to the Quiron Hospital in Murcia. We have also used (I think) 8 other medical facilities in Murcia, Elche and Torrevieja.

This seems to be quite normal. We have met numerous other people "doing the rounds" - each having different insurers.

Into the detail .... insurers may quote the various clinics and hospitals that they use, but in reality, they pick and choose exactly what services they contract for at which hospital. So if your insurer's brochure says that they use (say) Quiron or Imed hospitals/clinics, the city you have to go to depends on the medical service you need.

We use a GP in our village (not the health centre) and she acts as the gateway into the DKV system - and she is very good at it.

Our local GP works with DKV (which may be why our local insurance broker recommended DKV). So it seems that the most important thing is to have an insurer who works with your local GP.

In theory you should only seek treatment from the places detailed in your insurance.

In practice, some health centres will give you a temporary SIP card enabling you to use the state health system. According to national law they shouldn't, but it's worth asking.

After you've been resident for twelve months, you can buy into the state health system, giving you full access to treatment, albeit you would have to pay for prescriptions. This might be cheaper than PHI:

Thanks for the info Jim

We will look out our local medical centre and present our Private Health Insurance Card as a first port of call.

We can then gauge how well we are received and what facilities we can access before going further afield.

Thanks again

Trevor

Trevor, rather than showing them proof you've got PHI, I'd just show them passport and, if you've got it, padrón.

I've never kept tabs on which medical centres do and don't issue temporary SIP cards, but there are quite a few in my area.
