Hi, some advice please. We r travelling through Eurotunnel next week. Are we allowed to bring ANY dog food for the 3 day journey. Internet seems to say NO meat products including tinned pet food, unless you have a vet’s note…? Or do we have to do a detour off the motorway to get some once we arrive in France?

Also does anyone have a good English-speaking vet near Pilar they can recommend for the necessary stuff to do before our return?

And finally, our vet recommends getting an EU pet passport issued in Spain which would solve the palaver of animal health certificates which only last 4 months. Thoughts please if you have experience of any of the above.

Many thanks. Barbara

Hi Barbara, you are not allowed to bring dog food into France, there is a supermarket (leclerc) just off the motorway at Boulogne before you join the pay section, just look for the sign "centre commercial" as you come off the motorway turn left at the roundabout, it is about 1km down that road also handy for fuel, which at the moment is 1.52 diesel 1.62 petrol and seems to go up daily!! have a good trip, cheers Martin

Hi, we bought a Spanish passport for our dog at our local vets, 35 euros much cheaper than the 40 day paperwork, brought dog food with us no problem, we were not stopped at the French or Spanish boarders.

Hope you have a good journey

Thank you, Amanda, I have heard this but wanted a back up plan! So dog food in, with a Leclerc detour if it gets confiscated. 🤞 best wishes, Barbara

Barbara, we made the trip in July with 2 dogs, one with Spanish passport and the other on Uk passport, they are now both on Spanish passports, and an awful lot cheaper. The only thing you may have to pay extra for are the rabies jabs, the uk jabs last for 3 year, the Spanish ones only last for a year in the Valencia region, the rest of Spain last for 2 years.

Both our dogs will get their rabies jabs in April next year in Spain, the yearly booster jabs administered in the uk are about half price in Spain.

Dog food, we brought with us in July about a dozen tins, no checks were made at either of the borders, in Oct we brought 36 tins, again no checks were made.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for this… everyone who has brought pet food in reports no problem so that is what we will do.

And the EU passport with rabies jab appears to be a no brainer! 💪

One last thing. Do forum friends have a recommendation for a decent vet in Pilar de la Hiradada please? Many thanks.
