Hi folks, I'm married to a Spanish lady and have been a resident in Spain for eight years. My wife's polling card arrived last week but not mine. Today I telephoned the department to ask why and I was told that as Britain was no longer a member of the EEC the rules had changed and that British residents now had to apply to the local Padron informing them of my wish to vote and request a polling card. This option expired in January but I received no notification from any local or district authority and now have lost the right to vote through no fault of my own. I do take an interest in local affairs and have opinions of my own on what happens in my community so I find this state of affairs more than a little frustrating. I just wondered if anyone else has had this problem. Thanks.

You should have received notification prior to the Jan 15th cut off date. However, you need to inform the ayuntamiento of your intention to vote either in person or by the electronic means with a clave.

We received our intention to vote cards in, I think, December last year. Looks like yours must have gone astray or they are taking the rules about it being your responsibility to apply to vote seriously in your area.

Perhaps you did not renew your Padrón after 5 years. This is the register they use, like our electoral roll. So if you are not on it they would not send out an invitation to vote. I do agree with you, the lack of information is a serious problem, and the post is very hit and miss. If you renew your Padrón now, at least you will be able to vote in 4 years time. 😎

I did that Sheila. It makes me laugh they missed me out and then this morning the police came and gave my wife a form and ordered her to be on standby on voting day as she had been nominated by the powers that be and she was a stand in monitor at the polling station if any of the others failed to turn up.
