The gambas here are just no match for the fat and tasty ones from the Gulf Coast of the USA or west coast of Mexico (let alone tiger shrimp from Vietnam). Where can I buy the real deal to cook with?
How about flying over to the West Coast of America or Mexico? Just a thought!

If there is a Chinese or Asian supermarket nearby you could try them. Or go to the fishing docks very early in the morning..

Look for the Carabineros. They are the jumbo prawns. Probably the central market in Alicante city or the frozen food cabinets in supermarkets.

I agree with Bee that carabineros are the best you'll find, but they can be extremely expensive.
Have a look at Guardamar fish market - open weekdays from about 10.00, and it's on the marina.
OUR MERCADONA SELLS HUGE PRAWNS FOR JUST UNDER 11 EUROS PER KILO ON THE FISH COUNTER. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM.

As do Consum and Lidl. Probably others do as well.
But there could be confusion here.
Shrimp seems to be a generic word on the other side of the Atlantic, regardless of size.
Here there are gambas, which are small. I think they might mean langostinos. and other bigger mariscos.
Rather aggresive request.

In all of my 20 plus years of living here in Spain I have never come across Asian Tiger Prawns, even in Chinese or the Asian supermarkets. We used to get them when living in Singapore and Penang. They were on average 12 inches in length. I kid you not My amah, in Penang, used to get me them direct from the local fishermen
