It sounds as though the beetle plague that severely affected the pines on the Sierra de Orihuela, and the hill at Hurchillo, has spread. This nasty insect - tomicus destruens, or barrenillo de los pinos (pine borers), has changed a large area of Orihuela mountain from green to brown.

Unfortunately I'm not up to date on the situation. I know that fumigation in some areas has been done, as has thinning out the growth in order to strengthen the remaining trees so they're more able to resist attack, but I don't know how extensive or succesful this has been.

It's probably where they have sprayed the pine trees because of the caterpillars.    nesting in them!
