If you are not resident an extended travel policy would be sensible. You may of course elect to pay privately at any of the many private clinics. Most Spanish health policies are a minimum of one year paid in full in advance. Your stay will of course be governed by the current 90 day maximum in any 280 days.

Good afternoon. We are hoping to spend the winter in Torrevieja and are concerned about health insurance. Checking on line there seems to be a problem getting health insurance if we are not 'Jabbed' has anyone else come across this. Also recommendations for Spanish health care insurance for non residents.

Thanks

When you say ‘spending the winter’ I assume you know about the restrictions since Brexit? That you can only spend a maximum of 90 days in any 180 in the Schengen area, ie most of Europe?

There may well be difficulties getting insurance if you arre not vaccinated, I cannot advise re this. But all Spanish PHI is for a minimum of one year paid in full in advance. Would it not be more appropriate to obtain extended travel insurance which is comprehensive and designed for the purpose? There are myriad companies offering sll kinds of travel policies, as a non resident this may be a better dolution?

Just adding to Stephanie's info, I wouldn't think Spanish Healthcare would be at all suitable as it would offer you no repatriation if needed and meant to be for Spanish residents who don't qualify for free healthcare.

Travel insurance is made for your purpose but I wanted to add please ensure you choose the appropriate terms and conditions (ie.the length of cover period, maximum no of days away on holiday and no of days in the year in total) . If you exceed these terms you may find you wont be paid out if something happens. We have health conditions and both over 70 and stay twice for 90 days each stay so getting cover to include all those limitations have been a nightmare but no use buying cover if its not fit for purpose! Happy researching!

Regards

Pauline.

If UK resident, I would recommend Staysure https://www.staysure.co.uk/single-trip-travel-insurance/ and https://www.staysure.co.uk/annual-travel-insurance/

They will insure single long stay trips and annual insurance with an optional 100 day extended cover. They will provide cover for the usual pre existing conditions (high BP, cholesterol etc). There is an age limit at which premiums rise, I think it's 70.

We've used them for years.

Hello

To be able to know what insurance is best for your needs, you must know the difference between the two:

Travel insurance only covers emergencies which has limitations on coverage, for example, it would not cover a consultation with a specialist to obtain a diagnosis or a preventive check-up.

Health insurance covers both emergencies, and comprehensive medical assistance with no limitations on expenses through the insurers network.

You must also consider how much time you will spend here in Spain. (Whenever it is possible, I suggest you get health insurance)

As specialists in health insurance, we know of no limitations for not being vaccinated as it isn't a pre-existing condition, so you shouldn't have any trouble to take out private insurance for this reason.

I hope this helps.
