I investigated this, and the cover does appear to be more limited than in UK; also still quite costly. I gave up pet insurance in UK for our two cats, as by the time we had paid the subscription, then the excess if we needed to claim, it wasn’t financially justifiable, it cost more than just paying for the treatment. Also the older the animal, the greater the cost and previous anything totally excluded.

Vet’s fees here aren’t as expensive as UK, so it’s a point to consider.

Agreed, that’s appalling - but I do remember reading something in the T and Cs of a proposed UK policy that they wouldn’t cover anything against which the animal should’ve been vaccinated.

Hi Kimmy, dreadful situation, understood - but re accepting ‘assurances’ from breeder, in UK the vets issue certificates for all vaccinations, so why didn’t they get them here? One needs a pet passport, and vets here complete certification every time they vaccinate. Sorry, not blaming your friends and I can easily see how it happened, but stil.....?

One of our cats has unfortunately developed the most hideous skin allergy to the fleas here -the other completely unaffected. This results in red raw weeping patches, not helped by the heat. The regime we now have to keep to is treating with Stronghold Plus every three weeks and an anti histamine injection from vet every four weeks. Plus the usual worm tablets, annual vaccinations and so on. If we delay or miss an antiflea treatment, the whole thing starts all over again - we are currently battling to control it again having inadvertently missed one.

We pay for it, it’s not as expensive as Uk, 15 eu for the antihistamine, but the stronghold is very expensive. And the online sales of flea treatment has been stopped, I have been told, because fake products were coming i from, apparently, Bulgaria, and sold at half the cost. The stronghold is about 15eu per dose - and two cats!

Hi Kim

Yes, you are quite right to mention it to friends. I feel so sorry for your friends and their dog. Awareness of the human version of Leish is becoming more widespread in UK due to a couple of widely reported incidents and the resultant media panics; however, of course, not for animals.

No, thank god, we don’t bathe cats!!!! Can you imagine. As it is they hide everytime they see me approaching purposefully and my husband sitting with a towel on his lap in anticipation of restraining them whilst treatment applied - I don’t know who gets in more of a state - me or them! And this is also why, should something really awful happen to them, I would not subject them to endless medical intervention and would have them put to sleep as it would be kinder than subjecting them to extended and possibly painful treatment.
