A morning in the life of a volunteer!
APAH has two separate rescue centres – one for dogs and one for cats, based in the Pilar De La Horadada area on the Alicante / Murcia border.
I volunteer at the cat rescue centre for one morning a week and I am usually there for about two hours. There are three of us on duty that morning and each of us is responsible for various tasks to ensure the health and welfare of the cats.
I clean the communal areas where the adult cats live. There is the indoor area – I call this the bunk room because there are various beds for the cats to sleep on. I make sure that the bedding is clean and tidy, I wash the shelves, sweep and mop the floor and make sure there is an adequate supply of dry food and water.
As I am doing this, another volunteer will have fed all of the adult cats with wet food and will then have moved into the room where the litter trays are housed and will be busy changing the litter and cleaning the trays. The floor in this room is also swept and mopped.
A quick clean of the office and then it’s on to the outside area. There are plenty of chairs and a couple of sunbeds for the cats to lounge on during the day, when it’s warm and sunny. There are also some purpose-built cat trees for the cats to climb, scratching posts and toys for them to play with. So, I start off by removing the cushions from the chairs, making sure that they are all clean, moving all of the furniture and toys to one side and I sweep and clean the floors and surfaces, then I repeat the process on the other side.
During all of this cleaning, the cats love to interact with the mops and cloths, chasing them around and having a whale of a time!
In the meantime, the third volunteer looks after the two other sheds, where the kittens and junior cats stay. There is feeding, emptying litter trays and cleaning to do in this area too.
We usually all finish at around the same time and help each other out if needs be.
Sometimes we have to give medication to a cat and we are provided with clear instructions on what to do.
And finally, our reward... to spend some time with the cats, letting them sit on our laps, fussing and playing with them!
I really enjoy volunteering at the cat rescue centre. It is very rewarding!
We are always on the lookout for volunteers. Would you be interested in volunteering with us for one morning every week?
