I agree with Yorks. My wife had one sent to her as a present over a year ago, and it works perfectly well.

Ours talks English. You can alter the language in the Alexa app.

If it is the basic model you will need to download the appropriate Amazon app on your mobile to set up. Then of course a WiFi connection.
On models with on screen display all that is needed is the WiFi connection.

If I had this problem I would reset everything and start again. I am an IT numpty but start slowly and do what it says on your screen.
