Hi Kelvin,

As the saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words".  A grim picture, but nevertheless.......

Stay safe,

Kim

Every Covid death is cause for regret. If I'm reading these data correctly, the UK has the second highest per-capita death rate (after Belgium), and just a bit higher than Spain.

Hi Kelvin,

As I've said previously, Belgium has had a more rigorous counting system for Covid-19 deaths, as they included care home deaths in their numbers from the start. That's why I think quoting the death rate per 1m, or per 100k, or any single data set is a blunt instrument.

It seems that scientists and most commentators now agree that the 'Excess Death Rate' is likely to give us the most accurate statistics for comparison.  Even BoJo accepts that, which I think is uncharacteristically candid, since that metric shows the UK has the worst death rate in Europe.  I wonder if he was given permission to say that......

What worries me is the fixation on single data sets - I'd rather see much greater focus on how all data is being used to determine policy going forward; otherwise, there's a distinct risk of another spike as countries ease lockdown.  As you say, any more deaths would be tragic, especially when we've all worked so hard to get to where we are now.

Interesting article in The Guardian yesterday, covering scientific evidence given to the Lords Commitee:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/02/covid-19-spilling-out-of-hospitals-and-care-homes-says-uk-expert

It seems the UK and Spain are inextricably linked.

Kind regards,

Kim
