In certain areas the UK licences are taken when applying for the Spanish licence, is it still possible to drive in the UK if we go back for a holiday before we are in receipt of the Spanish licence? Also can we retain the old paper one and drive in the UK with that? Evidently the cost is at least a hundred euros cheaper at the office where the UK license is retained.

If you give your residence as Spain when you go back to UK then you cannot use paper license .the only way to use paper license is if you have lived at the address you put on your license when you first got it the idea was everybody should have a photo ID license to drive in UK and as they only issue license with photo if you get stopped by police they will try and give you a ticket as not many people know about the paper licence rule

Also just looked on GOV.UK and it says if moving abroad you cannot add new address on British licence you have to go to DVLA of that country rod

Val, have you read my guide?

https://www.costablancaforum.com/area/almorad%C3%AD-spain-11/driving-hire-buying-owning-car-licences-documents-itv-testing-in-almorad%C3%AD-14/jims-guide-exchange-a-uk-driving-license-for-spanish-41247/

The cost is fixed and doesn't vary between offices.

I also say in the guide:

They may, or may not, keep your UK license. If they do, they'll give you a paper permit to drive in Spain (Spain only, so don't do the application if you're about to go back to the UK).

What are you calling a "paper licence"?

If you're referring to the now defunct paper counterpart to the UK photocard then although it's (still) widely believed otherwise of itself that is NOT a licence and cannot be used to drive with anywhere.

Whichever type of licence you hold though at this late hour in the Brexit fiasco and with the threat that in a no deal scenario a UK licence may cease to be exchangeable for a Spanish one forcing you to take a Spanish test, the idea of delaying an exchange for the sake of what presumably would be an optional 'holiday' in UK, seems rather ill advised.

Note in UK at least there is no obligation to carry your licence when driving so if you did initiate a exchange and decided to make the trip back armed only with a slip of paper from trafico (and taking the ferry from Spain) then if stopped in UK you'd probably be ok claiming that you'd lost or misplaced your licence as a police roadside check with DVLA will - or ought to - establish your entitlement to be driving.

Personally I don't think I'd risk it though!
