I have written a book which has just been proofread. It's now ready to be submitted to a publisher. The advice I would give to you is to research for any information that you may require. I will give you an example.
What inspired me to write my book was a true event but the book is a work of fiction, except for the event that needed to be explained within the book. Part of the story is situated in Bangkok Thailand, a place that I have never visited. Obviously, I needed to do some serious research about Thailand in order to make it realistic. So if you need to research anything make sure you do it before you start to write your story.
Another tip is to list your characters on a separate piece of paper. As your story progresses you may need to recall which character needs to be inserted into a certain passage in the book. My book has several characters and at different points, in the book, they are split into different teams in order to perform different tasks. When there are many characters you need to be sure that the right character is where he/she should be and with the right people.
I use a thesaurus on occasions; you will need to use different words to say the same thing as it can get repetitive if you use the same word every time to describe the same thing.
Also, use paragraphs as a means of breaking up long blocks of words and also use speech to bring your story to life. When using speech by different characters, you can form a new paragraph every time a different character speaks. You can use this method when a character has a lot to say by, for instance, another character either having a thought or asking a question.
There is a lot to consider but you could always go to the Amazon website and you will find no end to books that have been written to help you to make a good attempt at writing your first book.
When you think that you have finished your book you should re-read it and I have no doubt that you will start re-writing certain sections to improve it.
When you are happy with your manuscript it's probably time to ask a good friend to read it and ask for a truthful assessment of your story and if he/she has any thoughts on how it can be improved.
I have no doubt that once you get into writing your story, it will give you a lot of pleasure whether you would like to have it published or not.
Good luck and don't give up.
