I love cats and dogs! I heartily agree with the previous posts regarding dog owners being the problem not dogs. I would, however, like to spread the discussion to include cats and their owners. We are surrounded by cats. They use our garden as a toilet and pee/spray up our house doors. Besides this we have watched them murder fledgling blackbirds and other birds. There seems to be some mysterious feeling that we should feed the feral cats in the area despite there being just too many of them. I would point out that the feral cats started out as cat lovers pets and only became feral when their owners left the area and left their cats to fend for themselves. There appears to be dual standards at play somewhere. A dog owner can be fined for allowing his dog to foul the pavement whilst it seems that cat owners can allow their pets to go onto private land and perform their ablutions, dig up plants - can someone explain this? I realise that I will immediately become labelled as some sort of cat hater and utterly despicable individual for daring to question the cat lovers. I am not. My wife and I have had a variety of pets over the years but took a decision some years ago that we had become too old to properly care for them particularly in a small society like Campoverde.

Saying that all feral cats are derived from abandoned pets is a bit harsh and wild dogs didn't appear on their own.

The real difference between dogs and cats of course is that dogs are, or should be, always under control of their owners and are easily contained, cats on the other hand are their own masters and can jump or climb into gardens or wherever takes their fancy. How you prevent or even curtail that I don't know.

Forcing a cat to stay inside a house or somehow tethering it would be bordering on cruelty.

Our cat never leaves the property, she seems to have no desire to and can't jump anyway, just getting on the sofa in order to clamber across to my chair and lap is a feat!
