Hi,

I've retired at last and Avvy is retiring in the early summer next year. In February this year we spent a couple of weeks in Cartagena. Loved the old town but we couldn't live there (we don't want to be in a big town, prefer somewhere villagey outside a town that has facilities a village doesn't).

We have had a look at the Campoverde to Mils Palmeras area (walked along the Rio Seco - we are into walking/hiking), looked at Horadada etc. and really took a shine to Campoverde, particularly the old village. We had a brief look at Alcazares and Orihuela but weren't taken by them (we were there only for a drive through, so may be mistaken about them).

We intend to rent in Campoverde for a few weeks in the summer to ensure an informed choice. However, southern Spain is a big place, so we would welcome advice about where to settle.

Where else should we consider?  We live in Manchester and have had enough of miserable winters. We don't want an apartment in a complex; we would prefer a detached villa/house with a decent sized pool (so budget £180-220k) but would be happy with a communal pool. We would need a garden or courtyard to potter about in. Easy access to restaurants (the usual :-) we are foodies) and the countryside for hikes. We would like to part of both the expat and Spanish communities (both leaning Spanish).

Please let us have the benefit of your advice,

Avvy and Aidan

Hi Avvy and Aidan, also from Manchester and also retired/ing. We've had a place in Quesada for 10 years, really liked it but it is getting really built up and busy now. We looked at lots of places but as you say Spain is big. We didn't want to be too near the coast as we prefer to make our own noise rather than be kept awake by others. Came upon Campoverde last Xmas and revisited in April where we found our ideal place. Have only been back twice but love it and looking forward to spending more time there. Have a look at Pinar Properties, they are really nice and helpful. Good luck.

Pinar is a fantastic place to be, quiet and friendly but with enough going on to keep you entertained. Ten minutes to the coast, very cheap municipal pool and enough shops to save you having to go into town if you don't want to. What's not to love?

There are a couple of small downsides though, there are an abundance of small black flies through the summer due to the fields around us (that may be just because we back onto the rio seco?) and since san Javier airport closed it's a 45 minute to an hour journey to either of the airports now, but those are small prices to pay.

I would recommend Campoverde.  There are properties here in your price range and and there are at least 20 restaurants.  Also we have a good health centre which is in the process of being upgraded.  There are tennis courts and lots of associations  to belong to.  We have lived here 15 years and don't regret it at all.

We hope you enjoy your life here where ever you decide to settle

Thanks for the replies guys. We will be renting in or nearby in the early summer  for a few weeks to confirm if it is the place for us to settle. Sadly we are both too busy - that will change!!! - to come out any earlier for more than a long weekend.

Thanks Again, Aidan and Avvy.
