Since we moved to Spain, I've found that my wine intake has reduced a lot. I was used to drinking mainly Australian, New Zealand and South African wines. I've found that here the vast majority of the reds are indifferent, and the whites are mainly poor and lacking in flavour. It also annoys me a bit that you usually have to look at the label on the back of the bottle to find out what the grape is.
Spain do some nice Shiraz if you can find it. If you want other reds, then I'd go for the ones that have been of a good enough vintage for ageing rather than needing drinking whilst still young. Crianza, reserva, or gran reservas usually have more flavour than cheap young wines.
If you want a cheap wine, go along to a bodega and see if they have sangre de toro (bull's blood). That usually has enough flavour to satisfy, but if you wear dentures you may find that they get stained.
Enjoy finding out!
