We applied online through the Government website (HMRC).  Very straightforward and only took a couple of weeks between applying and receiving our new passports.

Just out of interest.. my passport expires next year. Do you get the passport direct to your address in Spain ? and is that just as straightforward ?

Yes, all straightforward - passports were delivered to the house by courier and we had to sign for them.
